My year so far in Room 16 by Inderpreet

My favourite thing about being in Room 16 in 2013 was going to Camp Kaitawa and being in a digi class.

Something I would like to do in term four is Go to year 6 camp and go safe cycling on the road because I was at India last year so I couldn't do it.

Something I would like to do next year is come back to Parkvale for a visit if it’s a half day at Havelock Intermediate.

My dream job would be becoming an artist (maybe a teacher if not a artist).

Reading

The best thing about reading so far this year is Actively Learn.

The best thing I read this year was HATCHET by Gary Paulsen.(link). I enjoyed it because we did a literacy circle with it.

This is my favourite reading blog post (link) that I created. I chose it because I enjoyed writing it, It was to the author of my favourite book this year and it also has the trailer that me and the group I was in made.

This is my favourite reading post from someone else (Hemani). I think it is awesome because she presented it well, explained what a literacy circle is and stated her opinions about it (in a way she did).

Maths

The best thing about maths so far this year is the tests we had in term 3.

This is my favourite maths post from someone else (Teva). I think it is awesome because he presented it great, he showed his scores out of 25 and his percentages out of 100

I am really good at multiplication.

I want to get better at adding fractions.

Writing

The best thing about writing so far this year is all the different and cool writing prompts.

I was most proud of learning how to take a simple writing prompt and make it into my own original, funny and really good piece of writing. This is one example;

I chose it because it is very popular it shows how good of a writer I can be and it got 9 comments in 1 comment session (by the way it is the final episode before the season finale, here is a link to my Thunder Skull page on my blog, it has all the post.

This is my favourite writing post from someone else (Tyrone). I think it is awesome because it has a lot of creativity it is pretty funny, it’s long and has a good amount of detail and is a awesome story.

I am really good at making funny and creative stories

I want to get better at writing longer stories.

Integrated Topic

My favourite part of topic has been learning to respect other cultures

(link to one example) (my class got India) I enjoyed it because we got to do things we couldn’t do in other topics (cooking, making trailers and dancing in them, and more).

This is my favourite topic post from someone else (Elijah). I think it is awesome because the science was really cool and this explains it clearly, it is also well written.

How I Have Shown PRIDE

Personal  Best: I always do my personal best, at everything, fitness, P.E, math, writing, reading, math and especially at art.

Respect and Responsibility: I respect others, sometimes I may be a little unfair and slightly mean (on accident), but I treat others well and I am responsible, I forget things quite a few times but I do remember them and do them myself.

Integrity: I show integrity a lot, I barely lie, I only lie when I’m doing a prank or tricking someone (like my brother), but I always try to not lie.

Determination: I tried to do every challenge at Camp Kaitawa  and I succeeded, I only failed to complete about 3 things.

Enjoyment: I enjoy many things and I show enjoyment, not only at morning tea and lunch but in subjects as well, like math, art, writing and sometimes reading.  

Literacy Circle And Hatchet Assignments

In Term 3, 2 reading groups from my class began a Literacy Circle, the 2 groups were the “X-Men” and “The Avengers”. But there were too many in the Avengers so they got split into to 2 groups, “Avengers 1” and “Avengers 2”.

A Literacy Circle is when a group of people each get a chapter book (each person get’s the same book), they read 1 chapter and get a roll/assignment to do. The assignments are; “Discussion Director”, you right down 3 questions about the book like “What would you do if a pilot in the plane you were in had a heart attack?”, the discussion director in my group asked that question because it’s what happened in the book we were reading.

Secondly there’s the “Word Master” (my first roll). The “Word Master” has to find 4 different interesting words in that chapter, find it’s meaning, and write it’s meaning in your own words, then you choose 1 of those words to put in this 4 box thing (I’m not sure what it’s called), in one of the boxes you draw the word, in another one you write words with a similar meaning, in the 3rd one you put the meaning in your own words and in the 4th one you put a word in a sentence.

Next there’s the “Passage Picker”, the “Passage Picker” finds 3 funny, well written, surprising, thought-provoking or confusing paragraphs in the chapter he or she was reading.

Then there’s the “Connector”, the connector has to find text-to-text (when a moment in the book is almost the same as a moment in another book) in the chapter, text-to-self (when something in the book is almost the same as what happened to you once) and text-to-world (when something in the book is almost the same as what happens in the world).

5th we have the “Illustrator (illustrator)”, the illustrator draws a scene from the chapter and rights a his own sentence telling what is happening in the illustration.

Last but not least we have the “Summariser”. The “Summariser” just summarises the chapter he or she was reading.

There are 6 people in one group, (2 groups didn’t get to do a literacy circle)  they get 2 days to do the assignment they were given. After 2 days they all get share what they’ve done.  

I was in one of the Avengers, we were reading a book called HATCHET, it’s about a boy who gets lost in the Canadian woods when he’s on a plane to visit his father in Canada. All he has is a hatchet that his mother gave him, he’s all alone with “the secret” in his mind. We finally finished the book and I loved it. I think you should read it it is amazing.

Asiatic Lion Report

The Asiatic Lion

The Asiatic Lion (The Indian Lion) is a magnificent animal, though some people don’t appreciate it and hunt it even kill it. If we humans keep that up, the asiatic lion is going to end up extinct. So read this report to find out about the asiatic lion and how unique it is.

Description

The asiatic lions are 107cm in height, but they are 292cm in length including the tail. Their tails are a long golden skin and their mains (hair) grows to lengths of 60-90cm. Adult males weigh from 160-190kg, the females weigh 110-120kg. A skull of a male lions skull can go to 33-34cm and a female lions skull can go to 29-30cm. Their skins are a think darkish gold while the african lions fur is a much more gold and brown color

Threats

Threats to the asiatic lions are mostly humans. Believe it or not, years back, there were approximately a low 180 individuals, years of baby cubs being born later, asiatic lions population increased to over 411. Some asiatic lions are found outside the Gir Forest but shot and killed by humans. It’s actually ridiculous, because why harm an innocent creature for nothing, some people do it for fun. It’s not fair on the lions, and killing one lion might decrease their population by 10-20, because if the lion that you shoot is a leader of a pride. Well firstly get this, when a leader of a pride gets killed, all the cubs in that pride get killed as well, I’m not sure if humans kill them or if it’s just a lions way of life. I said before that years back there were less than 180 asiatic lions, but even years before that, asiatic lions were found all over India, there were over 10, 000, but humans couldn’t realize how magnificent they are, they lived in peace but that peace didn’t last, they were killed, shot, some got trackers planted in them so people could find their pride and kill all of them. Now only roughly 400 are left.

Habitat and What It Eats.

The asiatic lions are endemic to India (not found anywhere else), or more like the Gir Forest. The Gujarat state in India has a forest or national park area, it’s called the Gir Forest. The Gir forest in India is the only place where you will ever see an asiatic lion. I’m actually happy that they are in the Gir Forest, because they are protected. The asiatic lions are carnivores, meaning they only eat meat, so you keep one as a pet and try to make it a vegetarian, ain’t going to happen... Well maybe. So the asiatic lions eat dead meat that they can find, or eat other animals.

Life Cycle

Lionesses are ready to breed when they reach 3 years old. They give birth to 2-3 cubs. The asiatic lions start of as cute little cubs with a lite yellow fur. A cub also has dark brown eyes and whiskers only a few cm’s long. They grow to a teen, they are bigger than before and start to get a light brownish tone. Soon enough they are strong big lions.

Hunting

The lionesses do most of the hunting, while the lions do the most fighting. lionesses take all the cubs with them when the cubs are only 3 month old! (male) Lions do sleep most of the day but they are really strong and can hurt their prey easily when they actually hunt!

In conclusion, asiatic lions are a wonderful and incredible species and I would hate to see asiatic lions go extinct. I hope you have learnt to appreciate them and I thank you for taking the time to read this report.

Letter to Ken Catran

Dear Ken Catran,

Hi, I’m Inderpreet a student in a class (Room 16 Parkvale School, Hastings New Zealand) that previously read your awesome book “Dead Harry”. The book was great and here’s what I thought of it.

I just thought the book was so amazing, I just wanted to keep reading the story but we only got to read one chapter per day. I loved the book and it was so cool I listened to basically every work. There were some really incredible and emotional moments in the book. The whole class thought your book was incredible, so we made some trailers (my one is the first one), our teacher 

(Mr. Moriarty) put them on the “Tree Of PRIDE” (our blog) and he put a poll on which “Dead Harry” trailer is the best, vote if you want. Here is the link.  

My favourite character was probably Sam... Maybe Harry... But I liked Sam as a character because he was quite funny, same with Harry. They were pretty awesome, and I might be the first one to say that Elias Milton was actually a cool dude. All the characters were great but Sam was my favourite.

My favourite part in the book was the end. You described every moment so well and I thought the end was so cool. How Sam and Anna saw a black figure at the back of the library holding a gun. and saw that it was Mrs. Anson! It got so intense just a few moments later when Sam and Anna got locked in the cupboard to get burned alive, I knew they were going to survive but just like everybody, I didn’t know how. You are a great writer Ken Catran, amazing ideas, you painted a picture in my mind at every moment.  

In conclusion, you wrote an awesome book, and I was amazed by the story. It was great enough to make several trailers and I hope you make a sequel.

New Zealand Falcon Information Report

The New Zealand Falcon

The New Zealand falcon (Karearea) is thought as an aggressive bird but is actually such an amazing creature. And as much as you know about the New Zealand falcon, I’m writing this report to show you that there’s probably more to the New Zealand falcon then you could ever know.

Description

The New Zealand falcon is 47 cm in height and weighs only 50g! But for it’s height and weight, it’s really actually an aggressive and tough bird. The NZ falcon has no weapon to hunt, but it’s claws. The New Zealand falcons claws are razor sharp steel like and can injure and kill its prey easily. The Karearea is a beautiful bird. It’s wings are a yellow and white, black dotted pattern.   

Hunting

When the Karearea goes hunting, it hunts by sitting on a high perch in the countryside. When it’s prey is spotted, the NZ falcon dives down in speeds of a 180 km’s. Then when it’s close enough the Karearea strikes it’s prey with it’s claws. Sometimes, the NZ falcon even sits close to a nest that has eggs, when the parent of the egg isn’t nearby, the Karearea steals the egg to make it it’s snack, or it can wait until the bird has hatched and the NZ falcon will feast on baby bird.

What It Eats

The New Zealand falcon’s diet is known to be large insects, rodents, lizards and even other small birds. But as the New Zealand falcon is one of the most dangerous birds in New Zealand, it was actually shot and killed when it was seen as a threat to human and bird-life in New Zealand. Until 1970, when it became a protected bird.

Family-Life

both parents incubate the eggs, but before the NZ falcons settle down and nest, they perform a exciting courtship dance. It includes diving/swooping, chasing cliff races and all kinds bird fun!

In conclusion, the Karearea is a dangerous bird killing falcon, but is also much more and can have a great and wonderful life. And of course, don't kill this bird as soon as you see it, because it's not like there's millions of them because they are endemic to New Zealand.
